An defense minister has stated that the MoD is actively investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been told to refrain from discussing secret matters in all cars.
Safety Guidance for Defence Personnel
In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese vehicles.
The minister explained that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however noted that safety is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing threats of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those secret talks in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
This revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable China to disable buses and cause chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
This wider security situation underscores the importance of robust measures and caution in every aspects of official activities, from transport usage to communication habits.
