Teacher Killed and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers breached the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, police confirmed.
The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their living quarters, an official report indicated.
One member of staff was lost their life while safeguarding the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now being treated medically.
Observers recounted a considerable contingent of armed individuals, referred to locally as criminal elements, who arrived firing sporadically to create fear.
Local residents informed journalists that the gunmen subsequently marched a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.
The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, in coordination with armed forces and local protection units" to the area.
A organized locating and saving mission is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.
In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have increasingly been targeted for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to seek ransom payments or gain negotiating power with authorities.
The assault in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they expect and desire their children's secure homecoming.
Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has intensified significantly in the past few months, with learning centers bearing the brunt of the conflict.
