Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show approaches, one notices a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
