The English Team to Begin the European Championship 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium

The England national team will embark on their 2028 European Championship journey at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they attain the relatively straightforward passage for a championship taking place in most of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an English men’s match since the spring of 2016, when the Turkish team were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is highly likely to host the Three Lions for their inaugural game on June 10, 2028.

The English side are planned to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, if they top Group B, their round of 16 match would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Securing the runner-up spot would mean beginning the knockouts at Everton’s ground.

Tournament Kickoff and Rally

The event was launched at an gathering in Piccadilly Circus on the previous evening. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the host FAs were heckled as they arrived the venue by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged Israel’s national side to be expelled from global football because of the conflict in Gaza.

Signs were displayed with slogans stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Tournament Fixture List

The inaugural fixture of the European Championship will be played at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will include Wales if they make it.

Wembley Stadium will host both semi-finals and the championship match, which will be staged on a Sunday in July 2028 with a kick-off time at late afternoon.

It is anticipated that an afternoon start, which will also be implemented for European club finals from next season, will cater to family audiences and help reach a more diverse set of audiences.

Host Nations

The Republic of Ireland are due to play their opening match at the Dublin stadium and the Tartan Army would do the same at Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be held in reserve for any that fail to qualify for the tournament through the qualification path.

Stadiums and Elimination Phase

Villa Park and Spurs’ ground round out the nine tournament locations. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals held at each country’s national stadium.

The qualifying draw will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a host city last year when it emerged Casement Park could not be redeveloped in time, on 6 December 2026.

Tournament Vision

“It will be a competition for the followers and a showcase of everything we cherish about the sport – its emotion and power to foster unity.”

In excess of three million passes, a record for a UEFA European Championship, are expected to be made available to supporters.
