Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
